2006 Census results now available

The first results are available now on the Australian Bureau of Statistics web page. Notable facts revealed on Wednesday 27 June 2007 included:

  • Australia's population was predicted to reach 21 million in two days time,
  • for every 100 females there were 97 males,
  • the proportion of people reported as being born overseas remained unchanged since 1996 (22%)
  • 40% of the population was either born overseas or had a parent born overseas,
  • 33% of occupied private dwellings were fully owned, and 32% were being purchased,
  • 26% of people aged 15-29 did no unpaid domestic work each week,
  • Australians overall claim more than 250 ancestries and speak 400 languages at home.
