Copyright survey signed off

A copyright sampling survey conducted at Monash University between December 2005 and March 2006 has been officially signed off by the auditors for the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL).

The survey involved 54 Monash departments, schools and centres randomly selected by CAL. All selected areas were required to record photocopies made of hard copy material during the survey period. The survey also involved an electronic use component which was carried out by the library through its Readings and Reserve and Digitisation areas.

Megan Deacon, the university’s copyright advisor, says that the survey is conducted every three to five years throughout Australia’s universities. “The aim is to discover what is typically copied by universities so that fees can be appropriately distributed to authors and copyright owners,” she says.

“We have been given the green light by the auditors to say that they are satisfied with the quality of the results received from Monash, confirming that we have complied with our legal obligations under the Copyright Licence Agreement. I would like to thank staff from all areas of the university involved in the survey for your great co-operation in making the survey a success.”
