U.S. partnership to benefit Australian research

A major step forward for the Australian Research Repositories Online to the World (ARROW) project took place last week with the establishment of an international partnership to develop the required software.

In line with the goals of the ARROW project, the software will be developed and trialled by ARROW consortium members - Monash University, National Library of Australia, The University of New South Wales and Swinburne University of Technology – as a cross-institutional tool to manage and promote access to research output such as articles, conference papers, theses and digital collections.

ARROW consortium members will work with American library systems company VTLS Incorporated and two American universities – Cornell and Virginia - to develop a solution that builds on open source digital object software FEDORA ™ and a VTLS product known as VITAL.

“What we needed was a flexible, scalable software solution that would enable us to link together all kinds of research publications online and make them available to the world,” said ARROW project manager, Geoff Payne.

“This partnership will provide us with the solution we seek and allow us to move forward quickly over the next few months to achieve the project’s goals.”

After the software development and the trial by consortium members is complete the software solution with be offered to other higher education institutions in Australia to use for developing their online repositories.

University Librarian, Cathrine Harboe-Ree encouraged Monash University researchers to ‘become early adopters’ and lodge their articles, conference papers, theses and other research information such as digital collections in Monash’s online repository.

For further information regarding lodgement of research papers contact Andrew Harrison, ext 52682 or email andrew.harrison@lib.monash.edu.au
