| Monash staff and students now have access to large back-sets of electronic journals and several other electronic
resources as a result of some major purchases by the library.
Budget restrictions and the rising cost of journals in recent years saw a drop in the number of journals the library
could afford to subscribe to, but a recent budget boost combined with some significant one-off purchasing has
brought us back to our former high standards of access," said Director of Information Resources, Jill Wilson.
"Several large collections of earlier editions of journals, known as back-sets, as well as several other major
electronic resources requiring one-off purchases have been obtained, restoring access to vast quantities of
information that many, particularly academic staff, have been lamenting the loss of."

Newly available online resources include:
World Bank Online Resources
This resource provides statistical data for over 550 development indicators and time series data 1960-2001 for
over 200 countries. It also contains statistical data for 138 countries that report debt data to the World Bank. The
World Bank e-Library is a portal to the full text of over 1000 titles published by the World Bank over the past
several years.
Elsevier journal backsets
A number of electronic journal backset packages in various disciplines were ordered from Elsevier. These
backfiles (in conjunction with the agreement for access to current volumes) allow access to all volumes of the titles
covered. The library plans to continue to extend this access as funds permit. The backfiles involve a once-off cost
rather than a subscription. Areas already covered include biological sciences; computer science; organic
chemistry; chemical engineering; environmental science, business & economics and psychology.
Springer full text journals
A new deal with Springer Verlag provides Monash users with access to all online titles available from this publisher
(currently 400). An additional benefit is that 65 journals which had been cancelled in previous years due to
funding pressures have now been reinstated.
Institute of Physics publications
An agreement with the Institute of Physics now provides electronic access to all their journals including a
comprehensive backset 1874-1993. This will reinstate access to a number of titles cancelled in 2000 by the library,
and will include two new titles to be published in 2004 (Physical Biology and the Journal of Neural Engineering).
Print will no longer be received for any Institute of Physics titles.
Cambridge Journals Online
Provides full text access to 165 journals published by Cambridge University Press in the sciences, social sciences
and humanities. This extends our online coverage which was previously only provided free with print
subscriptions.
The Eighteenth Century Collection Online
Due to the strong financial position in 2003 the University Librarian’s contingency fund was available to support
this acquisition, which is being purchased over three years. This resource consists of digital images, fully text
searchable, of 150,000 English language books printed in the 18th Century, primarily in Great Britain, but also in
the Americas. General subject areas are: history and geography; social sciences and fine arts; medicine, science
and technology; language and literature; philosophy and religion; law; and general reference. There will not
initially be individual catalogue records – access will be via the databases page from mid-semester.
Business Source Premier
This aggregation complements the popular LexisNexis and provides full text of 3282 journals in the business area,
including Harvard Business Review and nearly 1050 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the full text, this
database provides indexing and abstracts for nearly 4400 journals in the collection. Information is offered in nearly
every area of business including management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, and more.
The database also includes other sources of full text information such as country economic reports and detailed
company profiles for the world's 5000 largest companies.
CRC Press
The library has subscribed to three new collections of online reference books from CRC Press in addition to
Engnetbase. They are Mathnetbase (65 titles), Environnetbase (131 titles) and Statsnetbase (50 titles). All titles
will be accessible individually through the catalogue. Publications can be browsed or searched.
Gale Virtual Reference Library
This is a database of full text encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialised reference sources for multidisciplinary
research. Access is provided to titles that the library has purchased. All books can be searched simultaneously or
individually. Searches can also be limited to specific subject areas.
