Caulfield Library trials midnight hours

In response to user demand the Caulfield Library will be trialing extended opening hours for the 2003 exam period.

During the trial period, from Monday 13th October to Sunday 16th November 2003, hours will be:

• Monday to Friday 8am - midnight
• Saturday 10am - 10pm
• Sunday 10am - 5pm (as now)

The increase of 19.5 hours per week was driven by the library's desire to meet local customer needs, according to Caulfield Library manager, Robet Hornett.

Citing the greater need for flexible hours among Caulfield campus' high population of part time, postgraduate, evening and international students as one reason for a possible permanent increase of hours, Mr Hornett said the library had been experiencing steadily growing use.

"Caulfield Library usage in 2002 increased by thirty-seven per cent and in 2003 by thirty per cent with the library running at maximum capacity for much of the time," Mr Hornett said.

By the end of 2003 the Caulfield Library will have a projected 850,000 users through the door, compared to 653,181 in 2002.

"If additional hours prove popular and feedback is positive we hope to adopt the extended hours in 2004," said Caulfield library manager, Robet Hornett.

Caulfield Library will be open until midnight on week days for the trial period.
