Australian tourism explored in rare books exhibition
Over 100 rare and curious published items on the theme of Australian tourism are to be featured in a special exhibition of material from the Monash University Library Rare Books Collection at the Sir Louis Matheson Library on Clayton campus. All Monash staff and students are invited to attend the exhibition opening, at 5:45pm, Thursday 23 October in the exhibition room on level 1 of the Matheson Library. Professor Peter Spearritt, Executive Director of the Brisbane Institute and co-author of Holiday Business: tourism in Australia since 1870 will give the opening address at 6pm. "The exhibition is a sample of what is available and helps show the range and depth of the holdings at Monash. For example there are some fascinating and rare guide books giving people tours of Melbourne and suburbs in 1870's and 1880's," said Mr Richard Overell, Rare Books librarian. "Seeing how we Australians have promoted ourselves to others at various times in the past provides us with some intriguing insights into how tourism has evolved, not to mention the strangeness of seeing familiar places in unfamiliar times." The exhibition will run from 22 October 2003 - March 2004 in the exhibition room on level 1 of the Matheson Library, Clayton campus. To view the exhibition go to Level 2, ISB Building, Sir Louis Matheson Library, Clayton campus or go to: lib.monash.edu.au/exhibitions/tourism/xtourismcat.html To request a catalogue of the exhibition items, email Lorraine.David@lib.monash.edu.au 9 October, 2003 current news : 2007 : 2006 : 2005 : 2004 : 2003 : 2002 : pre-2002 Need help?
