Biomedical research freely shared online 'to benefit all'

Biomed Central

The belief that open sharing of research aids scientific progress has prompted Monash to join forces with an independent publisher of biomedical research.

BioMed Central is a publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research.

The library and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences have cooperated to trial an institutional membership, which will enable Monash authors to publish free of charge online

"Most original research articles in journals published by BioMed Central are immediately and permanently available online without charge or without any other barriers to access," said university librarian, Cathrine Harboe-Ree.

"This commitment is based on the view that open access to research is central to rapid and efficient progress in science and that subscription-based access to research is hindering rather than helping scientific communication."

Monash researchers and students also have access to 60 free journals published by BioMed Central, covering all areas of biology and medicine, accessible from the library's catalogue.

Some Monash staff have already contributed articles to journals published by BioMed Central. These are listed on Monash's institutional members page.

All Monash staff are invited to attend a presentation regarding the publishing house by a BioMed Central representative from 3-5pm on Friday 29 August in the lecture theatre "South 1", Building 64, on the Clayton Campus.
