Bequest to benefit library users

Professor Monro
The late Professor Hector Monro

Monash Library users will benefit from a memorial fund established through a bequest from the late Professor Hector Monro, Monash's founding professor of philosophy.

The Hector Monro Fund was established in 2001 with a significant bequest from his will, and donations will see the fund grow to approximately $125,000 by next year.

The fund will be used to further increase the library's resources in literature, philosophy and librarianship, in line with the late professor's wishes.

University librarian Ms Cathrine Harboe-Ree said the Hector Monro Fund upheld a tradition that would benefit students and staff both now and in the future.

"The world's greatest libraries are built on the philanthropic bequests of individuals like Professor Monro, who had a deep commitment to supporting libraries, knowledge and education," she said.

Early in his career, Professor Monro worked as a librarian, and he was a long-time member of the Friends of the Monash University Library.

"He continued to show an interest after his retirement, attending rare books exhibitions at the Matheson Library when he was well into his eighties," Ms Harboe-Ree said.

Professor Monro, who joined the university in 1961, established the Department of Philosophy.

He was a renowned moral philosophy and ethics scholar both in Australia and overseas. He was also the author of four books and numerous papers in philosophical journals, most of which can be found in the library's catalogue, available at www.lib.monash.edu.au/
