Electronic repository set to showcase Monash research

ePrints Story

An internationally searchable, electronic repository designed to increase access to and recognition of the work of Monash researchers is now open for contributions.

Monash University Library information systems director, Janette Burke, outlined the benefits to Monash researchers of depositing research in the 'ePrint Repository' including:

  •  an anticipated increase in usage and citation rates due to accessibility of work;
  •  the ability to offer paper/s for comment immediately;
  •  lodgement of research material on a well-maintained, archival site.

"Studies show a marked increase in citation rates for research available online," Ms Burke said.

"Any academic material in an electronic format can be deposited here - working papers, pre-published journal articles and conference papers - basically anything that hasn't been commercially published or has open copyright."

Ms Burke said similar electronic repositories had been established by academic and research organisations across the globe.

"You can also use the repository interface to search the 167 networked repositories around the world, representing an aggregate of nearly two million items, which you cover in a single search, as well as being an excellent means for locating contacts within your field of interest."

"The development of repositories is part of an international movement to address a perceived threat to the sustainability of traditional scholarly communication posed by increasing prices of journals and the lack of access to the volume of research produced."

Ms Burke said the repository would also act as a central collection point and archive as well as a valuable resource for those wishing to search others' research.

"Right now we are seeking papers to deposit, so that when the Monash repository is linked up to all the others around the world in June we will be able to showcase the quality of what Monash has to offer."

To deposit material contact Andrew Harrison, digitisation centre manager, on ext. 52682 or for more information go to http://eprint.monash.edu.au

At present papers must be deposited by library staff. It is hoped the repository will eventually enable Monash staff to 'self-deposit' their work online.
