Library 'O' Week classes help students 'get ahead and save time'A thirty minute library class can save students precious hours and avoid potential frustration down the track says Information Literacy Librarian, Stephanie Foott. Students can now enrol in one of the more than one hundred classes on offer across all libraries. Thirty to sixty minute classes and tours are scheduled from February to April, covering topics such as using the catalogue and searching databases and the Internet. "Often students starting tertiary study can feel like they've landed in this vast information landscape," said Ms Foott, "and these classes are a bit like handing out the map." "The higher the level of study or research you are undertaking, the more you find you can't just type a key word in 'google' and get what you need." "The library is set up specifically as an access point to quality, scholarly information, so getting your head around how things work earlier rather than later gives students a real advantage." Ms Foott said the classes gave students a chance to develop speed and accuracy when seeking information, thus avoiding a crisis point when exam time or assignment due dates rolled around. "There is so much information available in so many formats and places that it's easy to feel lost - exactly how you don't want to feel when you are under pressure."
