Magazines exhibition: 'Cultural Time Capsules' on show
An exhibition of eighty-four colourful and curious magazines dating from the seventeenth century to the present, are currently on show in the Matheson Library. The exhibition opened to an appreciative crowd of almost one hundred on 19 December 2002 and will remain on display until 5 May 2003. “The opening brought in our biggest crowd yet, which, I think, reflects the popular appeal of magazines and a common desire to look back and wonder at ourselves,” said Rare Books Librarian, Richard Overell. “Magazines give us an intimate snapshot of the culture and time that produced them – for example, it’s not likely that we will see a 2003 edition of New Idea repeating their November 1963 headline; ‘101 ways to be a Happy Housewife!’” Mr Overell said, “although you never know.” “There are some real gems in this exhibition, and they represent only a fraction of the Monash University Library’s magazine collection.” To view the exhibition go to Level 2, ISB Building, Sir Louis Matheson Library, Clayton campus or go to: lib.monash.edu.au/exhibitions/magazines/xmagazinescat.html To request a catalogue of the exhibition items, email Lorraine.David@lib.monash.edu.au 19 December 2002 current news : 2007 : 2006 : 2005 : 2004 : 2003 : 2002 : pre-2002 Need help?
