Notes: After the defeat of the Japanese in 1945, the Nationalist Chinese government reclaimed the island of Formosa. Four years later the Nationalists fled to Formosa and established the Republic of China, a government dominated by the Kuomintang and determined to maintain its rights to the mainland. The State Department Central Files on Formosa provide outstanding coverage of political, military, socio-economic, and foreign affairs from 1945 through 1954: the rule of Chiang Kai-shek, military preparations and operations against Communist China, relations between the native majority and the "mainlanders," economic reorganization, the crisis over Quemoy and Matsu, and U.S. assistance. "Documents are from Record Group 59, records of the Department of State."
