Metadata creationBy professionalsIn a traditional mainly print-based library environment professional cataloguers and indexers created the metadata for information resources held by the library and provided access to these via the library catalogue. These metadata professionals have formal training and are highly competent in the use of descriptive and subject standards. While professional metadata creators will continue to provide high quality metadata in a web environment with a leading role in the development of standards and guidelines and quality review there are also a number of digital library projects now trialing semi-automatic / automatic metadata generation. By authors and professionalsThe annual DCMI conference proceedings contain a number of papers on metadata creation projects including models, methods and quality assurance in various communities of practice eg learning objects, open e-print archives, geospatial data etc which demonstrate the role of authors and the collaborative work of metadata professionals and resource authors in metadata creation. The papers can be found via the DCMI Conferences and Workshops site Automated metadata creationThe goal of the AMeGA: Automatic Metadata Generation Applications project was to identify and recommend functional requirements for automatic metadata generation applications in the library / bibliographic control community. The project was led by the School of Information and Library Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was supported by the Library of Congress. Metadata Generation Research (MGR) project is developing a model to facilitate the most efficient and effective way of metadata production by integrating human and automatic metadata generation processes. The research is being undertaken by the School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in collaboration with the National Institute of Environmental Sciences.
