Learning skills advisers work with students and staff to enable students to develop their academic language and approaches to learning, including:

  • study methods and exam preparation
  • collaboration and teamwork
  • effective listening and note-taking
  • problem-solving and critical thinking
  • reading strategies
  • essay, report and thesis writing
  • writing for research projects
  • academic English
  • oral communication and presentation

Undergraduate students

Note: Monash College students should approach Learning Skills Advisers at Monash College.

  • drop-in sessions during semester
  • workshops and classes
  • individual sessions for students with referrals
  • Language and Learning Online includes online tutorials, interactive exercises and examples of Writing for Subjects
  • EASE Learning Tools (158kb pdf) (12kb rtf) for listening to lectures and seminar presentation skills available on student computers in the library

Postgraduate students

  • individual sessions with a learning skills adviser
  • drop-in sessions for brief discussions (during semester)
  • workshops, writing groups and classes
  • MPA workshops coordinated by the Monash Postgraduate Association

Higher degree by research students

  • individual sessions with a learning skills adviser
  • writing groups and support groups
  • exPERT seminars coordinated by the Monash Research Graduate School
  • MPA workshops coordinated by the Monash Postgraduate Association
  • Learning Support for HDR Students, online tutorial 'Climb the thesis mountain'

Collaboration with academic staff

The library's learning skills advisers and librarians work with academic staff to integrate learning skills and information literacy into the curriculum.

Staff may also use this form (doc 40kb; rtf 104kb; pdf 63kb) to refer a student for an individual appointment with a learning skills adviser when a student is in need of intensive support.
