Past events: Friends of Monash University LibrarySoutherly Busters: an exhibition of Australian LiteratureSeptember 2008 This exhibition is a celebration of the completion and publication of the fourth and final volume of the massive Bibliography of Australian Literature. This publication and the associated Austlit database enable us to gain an overview of Australian literature in all its styles, and on all its levels. We can see at a glance the lifetime output of such one-time giants of the local scene as Vance Palmer, and also the vast outpourings of Australian pulp; a neglected genre, of fugitive publications in fields such as sci-fi, romance, horror, detective fiction and even westerns. The opening address given by Professor Peter Pierce, of the Monash Centre for Australian Studies. November 2005
Associate Professor Strauss says Mary Gilmore had almost too interesting a life for a writer, as her biography has overshadowed her poetry. She hopes to remedy this in her collected edition, which will demonstrate the scope of Mary Gilmore’s poetry, which ranges from bush ballad to love poetry, from socialist rhetoric to religious poetry. In the 1930’s, Mary Gilmore was regularly described as Australia’s best poet. Asia - East and SoutheastSeptember 2005 Ancora PressJuly 2005 The two books are:- Scroofing and slumming;
